The Uganda Dental Association (UDA) successfully conducted its University Mentorship Programme from 16th to 23rd October 2026, engaging dental students across four university campuses in an initiative aimed at strengthening professional guidance, career development, and the future of dentistry in Uganda.
The programme brought mentorship and professional engagement closer to dental students at Makerere University Dental School, Jeph International University, Equator University of Science and Technology in Masaka, and Kampala International University (KIU) Western Campus.
Through interactions with experienced dental professionals and academic leaders, the initiative provided students with opportunities to gain insights into the dental profession, discuss their concerns, and better understand the opportunities and responsibilities that lie ahead as future oral healthcare providers.

Bridging the Gap Between Training and Professional Practice
The transition from dental school to professional practice is an important stage in every dental student’s journey. Recognising the value of early professional guidance, UDA’s University Mentorship Programme seeks to connect students with practising professionals who can share their experiences, offer career guidance, and help prepare the next generation of dental practitioners.
Throughout the programme, students had opportunities to engage in meaningful discussions about clinical training, career growth, professional development, and wellbeing. These conversations created space for knowledge sharing and practical guidance while encouraging students to approach their future careers with confidence, purpose, and a strong sense of professional identity.

The mentorship activities took place at four university campuses between 16th and 23rd October 2026:
Makerere University Dental School – 16th October 2026
Jeph International University – 16th October 2026
Equator University of Science and Technology, Masaka – 22nd October 2026
Kampala International University, Western Campus – 23rd October 2026
The participation of these institutions provided an opportunity to engage dental students in different academic settings and strengthen relationships between UDA and the institutions responsible for training Uganda’s future dental professionals.
UDA extends its appreciation to the university administrations, dental students’ associations (DSAs), faculty members, and all other stakeholders who supported the programme and helped make the engagements possible.

Beyond individual career guidance, the University Mentorship Programme reflects UDA’s broader commitment to strengthening the dental profession through collaboration, professional development, and engagement with students still in training.
By creating opportunities for students and practising professionals to learn from one another, the initiative helps nurture a culture of mentorship, shared responsibility, and continued professional growth.
Early engagement with the profession also enables students to develop a deeper appreciation of the standards, ethics, teamwork, and commitment required to deliver quality oral healthcare.
As Uganda continues to strengthen its oral health workforce, initiatives that support dental students and connect them with professional networks remain important investments in the future of dentistry.
